The City
As the name denotes, Amritsar city is popularly known as the "holy pool of nectar". Brought into being by the fourth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Ramdas, it is among the earliest and most mesmerizing cities of India. It is believed that this place was the education place of the twin sons of Lord Ram: Luv and Kush. Before Sikhism came into existence, the learned sage Valmiki taught the Ramayana to these kids here. At present, Amritsar has grown into a holy centre of the Sikhs. Golden temple is the chief monument here and the history of this city significantly revolves around it.

Major Attractions of the city

The Golden Temple : Not only Sikhs but people from other religions as well arrive here from all over the globe to offer prayers to Guru Granth Sahib and take a wash in the Amrit Saras Kund for purification from all sins and diseases. The fourth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Ram Das founded this temple, a two storey marble construction, with an impressive dome of pure gold. The original Granth Sahib is reserved in the Golden Temple at the day time and at night is auspiciously returned to the Akal Takht.

Jalianwala Bagh : A memorial of India’s freedom movement, this garden memorializes the martyrs, and keeps everyone reminded about the disastrous incident that took place years ago. A British general, General Dyer, ordered firings against guiltless people on April 13, 1919, and took lives of as many as 2000 unarmed people. Today, this site of atrocious massacre, encloses a memorial with an eternal flame, devoted to the martyrs.

Durgiana Temple : This temple is devoted to Goddess Durga and is situated outside the Lohagarh gate of the old city and is an significant centre of pilgrimage for the Hindus. Baba Atal Rai Tower, Ram Bagh garden, Fatehabad Mosque, Tarn Taran, Harike Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary, Wagha Border are some of the other attractions of the city.

Other places to visit

Tarn Taran : Situated 25 kilometres away from Amritsar this place is famous as an excursion point. The sacred tank here is believed to have healing powers and is also believed that if a person suffering from leprosy bathes here, his disease would be cured. Here, a Gurudwara built by Guru Arjan in AD 1768 was built in memory of Guru Ram Das.

Gobindwal Sahib : Believed to be the final resting place of Guru Angad Devji, it is placed at a distance of 30 km from Amrirsar.

Amanat Khan Serai : This place is known for its decorative gateway and glassy tile decoration. Located at a distance of 38 km from Amritsar, it is a must visit for those who visit Amritsar.

Baba Bakala : Positioned at a distance of 45 km from Amritsar, it is an imperative site while visiting Amritsar. A Gurudwara here is devoted to Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Guru of the Sikhs.

By Rail : Amritsar railway station is the major way for railway commutation. Bhopal, Delhi, Calcutta, Jaipur, Lahore, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Baroda are well connected to Amritsar by rail routes.
