Climate
Bharatpur bird Sanctuary witnesses extremely hot climatic conditions. In summers, temperature may soar up to 45 ° C or even more. The season of winter also experiences extreme climate with temperature dropping to 5 ° C. With scanty rainfall, this area is extremely dry. In such a scenario, Monsoon becomes the lifeline of the place. Even though the sanctuary remains accessible for the visitors throughout the year, for suitable viewing of local and migratory birds there are times that are more suitable. The best time for viewing resident breeding birds is August to November whereas October-February is most ideal for spotting migratory birds.
The Park
Keoladeo Ghana National Park is the official name of this sanctuary on the records. For bird watcher, it is like a paradise. It is located 2 Km away from the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. The official name Keoladeo owes its origin from the Hindu temple devoted to Lord Shiva that is positioned in the middle of this park. The term 'Ghana' refers to the thick forest cover of the Bharatpur sanctuary. This sanctuary can be referred to as a man-made sanctuary. In 1760, a dam was constructed to save Bharatpur from the constant floods. The dam is made of soil dug from the earth. The place from which the soil was dug is now filled with water and is one of the major sources of water for the sanctuary. Without this Bharatpur lake, it is hard to imagine the survival of this sanctuary.
