Attractions in the city
Mahabodhi Temple : Mahabodhi temple is the major attraction of Bodhgaya, which is now a World Heritage Site. The temple symbolizes the architecture of Gupta and later Gupta Age. The temple has a large number of images of Lord Buddha and the carved inscriptions in the temple shows that pilgrims from China, Sri Lanka and Myanmar had visited this place between 7th and 10th century AD.
Buddhist Monasteries : The Buddhist monasteries have been built by the followers of Buddhism from different countries like Japan, Burma, China, Sri Lanka, Korea and Nepal. A significant feature here is that these monasteries have been built in the architectural styles of these countries. There are a several big and small monasteries in Bodhgaya that are worth a visit.
Archeological Museum : The Archeological museum of Bodhgaya was set up in 1956 to preserve the sculptures and valuable antiques of the area. The museum is separated into two galleries. These two galleries mainly display bronze and stone sculptures of Buddhist and Brahmanical faith of Pala period, scenes related to Buddhist pantheon, Surya, Zodiac signs on railings of Sunga age, etc. The timings of museum are from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm excluding Friday.
Other Places to Visit
Rajgir : Rajgir was the original capital of Magadha at the time of Buddha. It is also an important Hindu religious place and a several fair takes place here every three years during Malmas. There are quite a few places to see in Rajgir which is 74kms from Bodh Gaya,Gridhakuta or Vulture's peak is the place where the Buddha used to meditate and preach in the rainy season. The place is open from 6am to 8pm.
Gaya : Gaya is a religious hub and it is believed that the principal Hindu God, Vishnu has bestowed upon Gaya the power to forgive the sin of the sinners, who come here for pilgrimage. Gaya is the Vishnupad temple, which is the main tourist attraction. This temple was built in the Hindu Shikhar style of architecture and is sited on the west bank of Falgu River at the southeastern edge of the town. One thousand stone stepladders lead the travelers to the top of this hill, from where one can have a full view of Gaya.
Nalanda : Nalanda is the site of the world famous international university, which was at its peak of glory in the 5th century AD. It is 96 kms from Bodhgaya. The University had the capacity to house ten thousand students and two thousand teachers at the same time. The remains of this ancient University still inspire visitors to the place.
