Bikaner

Location
Situated in the desert districts of northwestern Rajasthan. Bikaner is popularly referred to as the 'Camel City of Rajasthan' and is situated at an elevation of 238 meters above sea level. Bikaner is situated 1496 kilometers away from Mumbai, 615 kilometers away from Delhi, 320 kilometers from Jaipur and 945 kilometers away from Ahmedabad.

Climate
Bikaner experiences a typical desert climate. In the summer time, climate is quite hot. The average temperature in summers falls in the range of 41.8° C to 28.0° C. In winters, the climate of Bikaner is to a certain extent pleasant. The average temperature in the winter season falls in the range of 23.2° C to 5.0° C. Rainfall in Bikaner is very rare and even if it rains, the amount of waterfall recorded is very little.

The City
Bikaner is referred to as the 'Camel City of Rajasthan'. Rao Bikaji, who was the royal prince, established Bikaner city. Bikaji was the son of Rao Jodhaji, who prepared his son to establish his own kingdom. He took his fathers’ order as a challenge and chose the kingdom towards the north of Jodhpur. This city of Bikaner was once a barren city. The city of Bikaner still conserves its old appeal in form of its historical monuments, stunning havelis, elegant palaces and remarkable temples.

The city of Bikaner is also known for its lip-smacking snacks, gujiya and sweets. Bikaner is famous for its old havelis and popular for the best riding camels in the world. The exotic camel safaris, its stunning forts and the worship of thousands of holy rats at Karni Mata temple are some of the most exciting aspects of Bikaner. Bikaner has magnificent buildings made of reddish pink sandstone. Bikaner's magnificent forts, wonderful palaces bear evidence to the fact that Bikaner is rich in historical and architectural heritage.

Tourist Attractions in Bikaner

Junagarh Fort : Raja Rai Singh, one of the most confident generals of Emperor Akbar, built the Junagarh Fort in 1593 AD. This Bikaner fort is called an unassailable fort as it has never been occupied by anyone. Within the fort are 37 palaces, pavilion Suraj Pol or the Sun Gate is the main entrance to the fort. The palaces worth visiting are Phool Mahal, Chandra Mahal and Karan Mahal. A museum with valuable miniature paintings and rare historic is located in the Junagarh Fort.

Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum : A tremendous collection of paintings, pottery, carpets, arts and crafts, terracotta and ancient weapons of Harrapan as well as early Gupta period then your search ends here in this amazing and well-maintained Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum. The timmings of the Museum is from 10am-5pm daily except Fridays and Gazetted holidays.

Lal garh Palace : The Lal garh Palace is named after Maharaja Lal Singh, built by his son Maharaja Ganga Singh in his memory. This place is a combination of European, Rajput and Mughal architecture. Its unique blend of architecture connects the unique style of the Rajputana, Islamic and European cultures. The palace is open from 10am - 5pm daily except Sundays.

Bhandeshwar & Sandeshwar Temples : The temples are devoted to the 23rd Jain teerthankar, Parshwanath ji. The temples exist as symbols of artistic tradition. They are popular for their mirror work and gold leaf paintings. These temples are constructed by two brothers Bhandeshwar and Sandeshwar. These temples are carved in red sand stone and white marbles. These temples are the oldest existing structures in Bikaner. The rich mirror work, decor and their gold leaf paintings are remarkable.

Bhandasar Jain Temple : Bhandasar Jain Temple of Bikaner was constructed in 1468 by Bhandasa Oswal, a popular businessman of the medieval period and was completed in 1514. Bhandasar Jain Temple at Bikaner is devoted to the fifth Jain tirthankar, Suminath. Bhandasar Jain Temple at Bikaner is a three-storey temple that is garlanded with beautiful paintings and complex designs.

Devi Kund : The royal crematorium that has several lovely cenotaphs known as Chhatris, is eight kilometers from Bikaner. Reflecting the Rajputana architectural way, the Devi-kund chattris pinch the hearts of tourists. These cenotaphs are popular for their paintings and architecture.

Gajner Wild Life Sanctuary
: This sanctuary of wildlife is one of the most commonly visited places in the city, situated about 32 kms away from Bikaner town. It is here that the Maharajahs have hunted a number of wild animals but now it is used for protecting a number of wild animals. Some of the most well known species of wild animals that are accommodated here are deer, wild fowls, nilgai, antelope, black buck, chinkara, wild boars and desert foxes etc.

Samadhis : This is 7 km from Bikaner and situated at the bank of Devikund. Chattris built by Maharajas of Bikaner can be seen here.

By Air : Jodhpur (243 Km) is the nearest Airport compared to Jaipur (321 Kms).
