Goa formed a part of the Mauryan Empire in the 3 rd century BC. This was followed by the rule of the Bhojas and the Satvahanas of Kolhapur who made Chaandor their capital. From 580 – 750 AD, the Chalukyas of Badami held, affected Goa until the Silharas took control in 1086 AD. After India gained independence from the British in the year 1947, Portugal refused to negotiate with India on the transfer of sovereignty of their Indian enclaves. On 30 May 1987, the Union Territory was split, and Goa was made India's twenty-fifth state, with Daman and Diu remaining Union Territories.
The state of Goa is rich in culture, people and festivals. Being a hugely multi-cultural state, its festivals and people are numerous and various. The people of Goa are very relaxed, friendly and extremely happy-go-lucky. The “siesta” is an important feature of life in Goa; in accordance with it, shops shut down their shutters from one to four. People of Goa belong to different beliefs and come from different cultural backgrounds and all of them know the importance of good living. Therefore, the chief feature of the people in Goa is the element mingling of cultures, traditions and life-styles. As a direct result of this fact, religious fundamentalism does not feature in their dictionary and religious tolerance is a regular feature of Goa life. The languages spoken are English and Konkani.
