The history of Rajasthan goes back to 5000 years and the origin of this massive land adverts to the famous myth of Ram, the seventh avatar or incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Ram aimed an arrow towards Lanka to burn the island where his wife was imprisoned by the antihero king - Ravana. Instead of reaching Lanka, the arrow turned towards the direction of the sea, which resulted in the evaporation of all the water. The dry land, which appears due to the evaporation of water, was the land of Rajasthan. That is why, Rajasthan, is called “land of dessert”.
The people of Rajasthan are separated into various castes and sub-castes. A major portion of the population of Rajasthan belongs to the Rajput clan. Rajputs were the former rulers of the large state of Rajasthan. Rajputs follow the Vedic religion and worship Lord Shiva, Surya (sun) and Lord Vishnu. Apart from the predominant Rajputs, the other castes found amongst Rajasthani people are Brahmins and Vaishya. Except these castes, there are also a number of agricultural castes in Rajasthan. Depending on agriculture for their income, these people come under the castes Gurjar, Jat, Mali and Kalvi.
The principle languages spoken are Hindi and Rajasthani.
